Justice Mohan Pieris was admitted, as an Attorney-At-Law of the Supreme Court Of SriLanka in 1975 and a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales in 1978. He was trained in Trial Advocacy at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy at its Teacher Training Trial Advocacy program at Harvard Law School; Economic Crime at the Centre for Police and Criminal Justice Studies University of Exeter / Jesus College Cambridge; Project Management for Development Foreign Investment Analysis and Negotiation, International Business with the Department of the Agency for International Development of United States of America and George Washington University.
After long experience in the Attorney General’s Department and active private practice he was appointed Attorney-General of Sri Lanka in 2008, Senior Legal Advisor to the Cabinet of Ministers in 2011 and as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on 15th January 2013. During his tenure as Chief Justice he undertook extensive Judicial Reforms inclusive of Electronic Filing of cases, case management and the expeditious disposal of cases. As chairman of the Council of Legal Education he also introduced Curriculum reforms and structural reforms in the Examination Procedure for Attorneys-At-Law. He relinquished office on 28th January 2015, and is presently Honorary Professor of Law of the National Law University New Delhi, Visiting Professor of the Rajiv Gandhi National Law University Punjab, a Visiting Lecturer to the National Law University of Bangalore, Assam, Orissa, Kochi, NUJS Kolkata, Nagpur, School Of IP Law at the IIT Kharagpur, the Symbiosis Law School Pune ,National law university Gujarat, Maharashtra, Nirma University Ahmedabad and the KLE Law Collage Bangalore and many others.He is also a member of the Judicial Council of the International Association of Law Schools and also enjoys an active practice in local and International Arbitration.
In 2021 Justice Pieris was appointed as SriLanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Organisation wherein he played an active role in Global affairs. Having completed the tour of duty as a Diplomat last December he has returned to a Chamber practice and resumed active engagement with academia in India.
