      NLU Delhi Global Scholars-in-Residence Programme

      About the Course

      At National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi), our ambition is to cultivate a truly interconnected academic community. We are driven by the conviction that meaningful collaboration, spanning both global and local contexts, is key to advancing legal scholarship and preparing our students for a complex world. We believe that by fostering strong connections and welcoming diverse perspectives, we can significantly enrich the academic journey for our students, researchers, and faculty, empowering them to tackle pressing societal challenges. Our aim is to bring together diverse minds – students, researchers, and faculty – to share insights and co-create knowledge.
      To champion this ethos, NLU Delhi has launched the Global Scholars-in-Residence Programme, a fully funded initiative covering travel, accommodation, and honorarium, designed to welcome scholars from leading institutions worldwide, as well as accomplished professionals and practitioners, facilitating dynamic interactions, joint research, and a powerful exchange of ideas. As a fully funded opportunity, the programme seeks to remove financial barriers for exceptional individuals wishing to contribute to and benefit from NLU Delhi’s academic ecosystem.
      Through these engagements, we aim to strengthen our position as a leading global university, renowned for excellence in research, transformative learning, and an unwavering commitment to intellectual collaboration.

      Objectives of the programme

      The programme is designed to enrich the academic and research ecosystem at NLU Delhi through interactions with outstanding international scholars.

      In particular, the programme will:

      • Offer opportunities to international scholars and practitioners to develop their research and explore innovative ways of engaging with NLU Delhi faculty and students in a vibrant and learning environment.
      • Promote greater academic and research links with institutions and individuals across the globe.
      • Provide opportunity to NLU Delhi faculty and students to benefit and learn from scholars and practitioners working on a wide range of research interests.
      • Explore possibilities of joint ventures and collaborative projects.

      Potential avenues for engagement

      Scholars are expected to engage in one or more of the following activities during their time at NLU Delhi, depending on their academic focus, availability, and mutual interest:

      Research engagement

      • With faculty members and relevant research centres at NLU Delhi to build on the scholar’s academic work and research interests.
      • Short-term research collaboration with faculty members/ research centres at NLU Delhi.

      Academic engagement

      • Faculty seminars for presenting their work.
      • Seminar courses (typically 25 – 30 contact hours) or short-term courses (typically 10 -14 contact hours).(Seminar courses are typically credit-bearing, while short-term courses may be offered as intensive modules or non-credit engagements.)
      • Special lectures in compulsory courses that are part of the B.A., LL.B (Hons.), LL.M or doctoral programmes.

      Participation in events/ workshops/ training programmes at NLU Delhi.

      These activities may be pursued based on the scholar’s expertise and areas of interest. At the end of their visit, scholars are encouraged to share the outcomes of their engagement at NLU Delhi in the form of a public lecture, a faculty seminar, or a short-written piece to be published in NLUD Journal.

      Facilities provided to scholars

      The following facilities would be provided to accepted international scholars under this fully funded programme:

      • Accommodation in the University Guest House for the duration of the visit
      • Office space with necessary IT infrastructure and administrative support.
      • Full access to the library, databases and e-resources subscribed by the University along with remote access for the duration of the visit.
      • Each visiting scholar will be assigned a faculty coordinator or linkage with a relevant research centre to facilitate meaningful academic engagement and integration into the university’s research environment.
      • NLU Delhi will provide necessary administrative assistance to facilitate smooth onboarding, including visa support and orientation.

       

      Application Process

      • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year; however, applicants are encouraged to apply at least 3–4 months in advance of their intended visit to ensure adequate processing time and alignment with academic schedules.
      • Individuals who wish to apply for the Global Scholars-in-Residence Programme must complete the application form. In order to be eligible for the programme, the visit must be for a minimum of two weeks.
      • Application Requirements
        Academicians
        • CV (with academic publications as a necessary part).
        • A statement of purpose (no more than 2000 words) that includes a research and engagement plan for the proposed duration at NLU Delhi.
        • Full text of the three latest academic publications in peer reviewed journals or book/ chapters in an edited volume with reputed academic publishers.
        • A letter of support from the head of the institution confirming that the applicant is a full-time member or employee (or equivalent) associated with the institution, and that the proposed visit has their full support.

        Professionals

        • CV (clearly indicating relevant professional experience and achievements).
        • A statement of purpose (no more than 2000 words) that includes a research and engagement plan for the proposed duration at NLU Delhi.
        • Materials as outlined above must clearly indicate a strong track record of engagement with the law either from a legal or interdisciplinary perspective.
        • Publication submission is not required.
        • A letter of support from the head of the institution confirming that the applicant is a full-time member or employee (or equivalent) associated with the institution, and that the proposed visit has their full support. In case of independent professionals, a self-declaration supported by two professional references may be submitted in lieu of institutional endorsement.
      • Application does not guarantee acceptance. The completed form and supporting documents would be considered by a committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor, NLU Delhi. All applications would be reviewed on a wide range of considerations including scholarly merit, practical value, engagement with contemporary or interdisciplinary concerns, uniqueness of the contribution and relevance to University’s teaching and research.
      • Preference will be given to applicants whose proposed work aligns closely with the University’s ongoing projects, research priorities, and academic strengths.
      • A decision on the application would normally be communicated within 6 weeks of making the application. A formal invitation would be extended to successful applicants along with relevant information regarding the visit (category, duration, allowed activities, etc) and a general scholar agreement.
      • The University is not in a position to provide detailed feedback on unsuccessful applications.

      What is the Global Scholars-in-Residence Programme at NLU Delhi?

      The Global Scholars-in-Residence Programme is a fully funded international academic residency hosted by National Law University Delhi. It supports scholars and professionals based outside India to engage in teaching, research, and collaborative academic exchange at NLU Delhi.

      Who can apply for this programme?

      Applications are welcome from two categories of individuals based outside India:

      • Academics holding full-time positions at colleges or universities located outside India (including non-law disciplines with interdisciplinary relevance)
      • International professionals and practitioners, including independent professionals, based outside India with over seven years of demonstrable experience in fields related to law or interdisciplinary areas.
      Can I apply if I live in India but work with international organisations?

      No. The Global Scholars-in-Residence Programme is specifically intended for individuals based outside India. Both residence, affiliation and professional practice must be situated outside India at the time of application. However, professionals and academics residing in India may consider applying for the National Scholars-in-Residence Programme, which supports engagement with NLU Delhi’s academic and research ecosystem for scholars within the country.

      What types of engagements are expected from scholars during their visit?

      Scholars may participate in a wide range of academic and research activities, including:

      • Collaborative research with NLU Delhi faculty and research centres
      • Faculty seminars and public lectures
      • Teaching seminar or short-term courses
      • Special lectures in core academic programmes (undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral)
      • Participation in workshops, training programmes, and academic events
      What kind of support will NLU Delhi provide during the visit?

      Visiting scholars receive:

      • round-trip economy airfare (including visa fees)*
      • accommodation in the University Guest House
      • office space and administrative support
      • access to library resources and databases
      • a modest honorarium based on engagement and duration
      • a dedicated faculty coordinator or research centre contact

      *Visa application fees are fully reimbursed. However, incidental expenses such as travel to consulates, document printing, or courier services are not covered. Personal and incidental expenses are not included

      How long can my residency at NLU Delhi last?

      Residencies typically range from 2 weeks to 6 months. Extensions may be considered in exceptional cases.

      Visits are ideally aligned with academic semesters:

      • Semester I: Early August – Mid-December
      • Semester II: Early February – Mid-June

      Short visits outside these periods may also be considered based on mutual interest and feasibility.

      Is there any application fee or programme fee?

      No. There are no fees at any stage of the application or participation process.

      What documents are required to apply?

      For Academics:

      • CV (with publication list)
      • Statement of purpose (maximum 2000 words)
      • Three recent peer-reviewed publications
      • Letter of institutional support

      Independent academics may submit a self-declaration with two references.

      For Professionals:

      • CV indicating professional experience
      • Statement of purpose (maximum 2000 words)
      • Evidence of engagement in legal or interdisciplinary fields

      Is the selection process competitive?

      Yes. All applications are reviewed by a committee appointed by the Vice Chancellor. Selection is based on merit, originality, relevance to NLU Delhi’s academic priorities, and the potential for meaningful engagement with the university community.

      When should I apply?

      Applications are accepted year-round on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply at least 3–4 months before their intended visit to allow adequate time for processing and coordination.

      Will I receive a formal invitation?

      Yes. Successful applicants will receive a formal invitation letter outlining the duration, category, expected activities, and relevant policies. A scholar agreement will also be shared for mutual understanding.

      Can I work elsewhere or enroll in another programme during my visit?

      No. Scholars are expected to focus fully on their academic engagements at NLU Delhi and refrain from other paid employment, academic enrolments, or external commitments during the residency.

      How should I acknowledge NLU Delhi in any resulting work?

      Any publications, presentations, or academic outputs stemming from your residency must acknowledge the “Global Scholars-in-Residence Programme, National Law University Delhi.” Scholars may also list their affiliation as “Global Scholars-in-Residence, National Law University Delhi” during the visit.

      Eligible Scholar Categories

      The University welcomes applications for the programme from:

      • Academics holding full time position in colleges/ universities located outside India (Academics from fields beyond law whose work has strong interdisciplinary relevance are also encouraged to apply.)
      • International professionals/practitioners based outside India, including independent professionals not affiliated with a formal institution, with over 7 years of demonstrable industry experience (Professionals and practitioners in any field with legal or interdisciplinary relevance are eligible.)

      Funding Support (Fully Funded Programme Benefits)

      Visiting International Scholars will be provided:

      • Travel fee (including visa fees)*: Economy class airfare (round-trip from home institution or current location)
      • Stay and lodgings: Accommodation would be provided on University Guest House

      Note: NLU Delhi will reimburse the standard visa application fee and service charge. Associated incidental costs such as travel to visa centres or medical tests are not covered.

      Roles and Responsibilities

      The programme is designed for scholars intending to work independently with minimal supervision. All scholars are responsible for their work and research while at NLU Delhi.
      Engagement in external commitments during the visit should be avoided. Scholars must not undertake paid employment, register as a student, work towards a qualification, or overstay their visa conditions.
      Selected scholars are expected to adhere to the University’s code of conduct and maintain the dignity of academic and professional engagement at all times.

      Duration of the visit

      Visits under the programme can range from 2 weeks to six months. Visits under the programme typically range from two weeks to six months. In exceptional circumstances, longer visits may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to institutional capacity, the nature of the proposed engagement and logistical feasibility. However, the proposed learning and research engagements must match the proposed duration.

      The visit should align with one of NLU Delhi’s academic semesters:

      • Semester I: Early August to Mid-December
      • Semester II: Early February to Mid-June

      Note: In exceptional cases, short visits outside the regular semester dates may be considered based on availability and mutual interest.

      Additional Information

      Scholars are requested to acknowledge NLU Delhi’s Global Scholars-in-Residence Programme in any publication that results from their work and research at NLU Delhi. Visiting scholars may indicate their affiliation during the visit as “Global Scholars-in-Residence, National Law University Delhi.” All such mentions must accurately reflect the duration and nature of the visit.

      NLU Delhi is committed to full compliance with applicable laws and regulations. All scholars are required to comply with applicable laws, regulations and policies at all times. Failure to do so may lead to withdrawal of scholar status.

      All scholars are required to obtain adequate health and travel insurance prior to their arrival. They must also obtain appropriate visa before coming to NLU Delhi. The University will provide necessary documents in support of the visa application.
