On 5 December 2023, Dr. Jackson Katz, an eminent author, film maker and educator known for his pioneering scholarship around issues of gender, race, and violence, joined us at National Law University Delhi to deliver a talk on “Role of Men in Countering Gender-based Violence”. His visit to NLU Delhi was coordinated by the US Embassy in New Delhi.
Dr. Katz’ talk provided an excellent opportunity to share and learn about the new tools and skills required to work in partnership with men to prevent and address gender-based violence. While discussing Mentors in Violence Prevention Strategies, Dr Katz offered a unique outlook to the term “bystander”, stressing upon its application within peer-groups and importance of leadership training in countering gender-based violence.
Dr. Katz is the co-founder of Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), one of the longest-running and most widely influential gender violence prevention programs in North America, and the first major program of its kind which is used by U.S. military and various sporting organizations. Katz is well known for his pioneering scholarship and activism on issues of gender, race, and violence. As a prominent figure and thought leader in the growing global movement of men working to promote gender equality and prevent gender violence, Katz has received great appreciation for his film ‘The Bystander Moment: Transformation Rape Culture at its Roots’.
Dr. Katz was accompanied by Mr. C.J. Woods, Public Diplomacy Officer at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and Mandeep Kaur, Advisor – Strategic Public Engagement, U.S. Mission in India, New Delhi.
