NLU Delhi Hosts the 5th Indian Vis Pre-Moot and ICC YAF Conference
National Law University, Delhi hosted the 5th Indian Vis Pre-Moot and the ICC YAF Conference from 5 to 8 March, 2015. The Indian Vis Pre-Moot is a preparatory competition for participants of the Willem C. Vis moots in Vienna and Hong Kong. This year, NLU Delhi joined hands with the International Chambers of Commerce in Paris and the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata.
To provide participants insight into the problem based on the concepts of Joinder of an Additional Party, Emergency Arbitrator and procedural and substantive issues regarding Letter of Credits, among other issues, the ICC YAF was organized on 5 March. The event saw an expert panel consisting of experienced professionals from Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai and India debate these intricacies, which took questions from the participants as well.
The Pre-Moot featured participation from 21 teams, out of which several foreign Universities participated via the E-Moot facility, a revolutionary concept in Indian mooting. The event witnessed teams as far as from Australia taking part via E-Moot. Moreover, teams from as far as São Paulo, Brazil flew in for the rounds.
The competition commenced on 7 March with four preliminary rounds before tribunals comprising of at least two arbitrators. That evening, there was a break night at Lodi – The Garden Restaurant.
The quarterfinals began on 8 March, followed by the semifinals, in which HNLU Raipur (Vis Vienna) prevailed against NLS Bangalore (Vis Vienna), whereas University of São Paulo, Brazil (Vis East) outmatched NUJS Kolkata (Vis Vienna). In a finals tribunal comprising of Arbitrator Harish Salve, Arbitrator AK Sikri and Arbitrator Christopher Lau, HNLU Raipur (Vis Vienna) narrowly defeated University of São Paulo, Brazil (Vis East). The Best Oralist award was picked up by Aniruddha Basu of NLS Bangalore (Vis Vienna).
