The ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished dignitaries from the judiciary and the legal fraternity, including Hon’ble Dr. Justice A.K. Sikri, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India; Hon’ble Mr. Justice Uday U. Lalit, Former Chief Justice of India; Hon’ble Mr. Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi and Chancellor, National Law University Delhi; Hon’ble R. Venkataramani, Ld. Attorney General of India; and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Judge, Supreme Court of India.
The programme commenced with the Welcome Address by Prof. (Dr.) G.S. Bajpai, Vice Chancellor, National Law University Delhi, who laid the contours of the rumination for the day. This was followed by an address on the award and its significance by Prof. Dr. M.K. Bhandari, Founder Director, GALTER.
The dignitaries reflected upon the profound influence of Prof. Baxi’s scholarship and interventions on the legal landscape. Hon’ble Dr. Justice A.K. Sikri remembered his interactions with Prof. Baxi as his student. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Uday U. Lalit reflected upon how Prof. Baxi intervened in cases of injustice to make it bend towards justice. Hon’ble R. Venkataramani shared his thoughts on attending Prof. Baxi’s classes as a guest student. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya pondered upon Prof. Baxi’s overarching influence on legal education and thought, while Hon’ble Mr. Justice Vijay Bishnoi elaborated upon how judges, in the spirit of Prof. Baxi’s work, strive to make a difference.
A key highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Prof. Dr. Upendra Baxi, jointly by the dignitaries on the dais, in recognition of his exceptional and enduring contribution to legal thought and scholarship. This was followed by an Acceptance Speech by Prof. Dr. Upendra Baxi.
The ceremony concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Prof. (Dr.) Niraj Kumar, followed by the National Anthem.
Held on Teachers’ Day, the occasion was a fitting tribute to Prof. Baxi’s enduring legacy as a scholar, teacher and mentor who has inspired generations of students and scholars.
