Guest Lecture on “Human Rights in South Asia: Institutional Challenges and International Law” (12th October, 2026)

Guest Lecture on “Human Rights in South Asia: Institutional Challenges and International Law” (12th October, 2026)

National Law University Delhi had the honour of hosting Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mohan Peiris, Honorary Professor of Law at NLU Delhi and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, on 12 October 2026 for a guest lecture on “Human Rights in South Asia: Institutional Challenges and International Law.”

Drawing on his extensive experience in the judiciary, international law, and diplomacy, Justice Peiris offered valuable insights into the challenges of human rights protection in the region. A particularly thought-provoking observation was that we do not live in a world characterised by a deficit of rights, but rather by an institutional deficit that impedes their effective realisation. Through illuminating anecdotes and reflections from his professional experience, he explored the relationship between human rights, institutional effectiveness, and international law.

The lecture offered a timely opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing South Asian countries, particularly India and Sri Lanka, and the role of institutions in translating human rights commitments into meaningful practice.

NLU Delhi extends its sincere gratitude to Justice Peiris for an enriching academic engagement and for sharing his insights with the University’s faculty, students and research community.
