Regulatory Framework for India’s E-Gaming Industry:

A Roundtable Discussion

 

National Law University, Delhi organised a Round Table Discussion on E-Gaming Regulatory Framework at Shangri-La Eros, New Delhi, on February 24, 2024. The meeting aimed to address the pressing need for a comprehensive regulatory framework in the rapidly growing e-gaming industry. With participants from various sectors, the discussion sought to navigate the complexities of e-gaming regulation while balancing innovation and  consumer protection, with a special focus on freedom of choice, taxation, regulation, and national interests. The  initiative was supported by E-Gaming Federation and as a part of their MoU with NLU Delhi.

The discussion brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including representatives from government bodies, industry leaders, legal experts, and academia. The discussion was chaired by Hon’ble Justice Prateek Jalan and steered by Guests of Honour Mr Balbir Singh, Senior Advocate, and Mr Rajshekhar Rao, Senior Advocate. Hon’ble Registrar of NLU Delhi Prof (Dr) Ruhi Paul, delivered the opening remarks, and Mr Anuraag Saxena, CEO of the E-Gaming Federation, set the agenda from the side of the industry. Mr. Kapil Chaudhary and Mr Sameer Chugh, General Counsels of Junglee Games and Games 24×7 respectively, also participated. Other attendees included Sameer Jain, Suvigya Awasthi, Ankit Yadav, Abhikalp Pratap Singh, Deepak Sinsinwar and Aagam Kaur. Their collective expertise and experiences enriched the discourse, fostering a collaborative environment conducive to constructive dialogue and knowledge exchange.

 

Key takeaways which emerged from the discussion were :-

The speakers emphasised the importance of agile regulatory frameworks capable of adapting to the dynamic nature of the e-gaming industry.

The need for comprehensive research to identify areas which require further regulation, particularly in ensuring consumer protection and preventing gaming addiction.

Furthermore, it was suggested to promote ‘Responsible Gaming’, survey/research on the psychological effects and opinion of the youth population.

Moving forward, continued dialogue and cooperation will be essential in shaping a regulatory environment that promotes responsible gaming practices while fostering innovation and sustainable industry growth.
