The Consultation Program on “Review of Marriage and Divorce Laws across Communities in India” was organized on November 17, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Room 506, Academic Block by the Centre for Comparative Studies in Personal Laws in collaboration with National Commission of Women.

In this regard, the Commission had already conducted regional level consultations for North Eastern, Western, Southern and Eastern regions in collaboration with premier National Law Universities.

This was the fifth and concluding consultation to relook the laws and the allied legislations in order to formulate specific recommendations for amendments and enhancing the outreach of the legislations. The objective of the review was to incorporate viewpoints of resource persons from different regions, religions and cultures considering that there are many region-specific, state-specific, religion-specific, and culture-specific views that need to be addressed, to make law more comprehensive and inclusive.

Prof. (Dr.) G. S. Bajpai, Vice Chancellor, NLU Delhi, gave the welcome address which was followed by the special address by Ms. Meenakshi Negi, Member Secretary, National Commission of Women.

The event was successful and intellectually fascinating as around 20 people from Northern region (Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh) of India participated as resource persons in the consultation and proposed variety of reforms that are necessary to address the challenges and promote gender equality within the legal frameworks which regulate and govern matrimonial relationships and dissolution. The consultation was a thought-provoking and an interesting event that added to the continuing conversation about the need to revamp family laws.
