International Conference on Shareholder Voting And Engagement In Emerging Economies (November 22-23, 2019)

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SHAREHOLDER VOTING AND ENGAGEMENT IN EMERGING ECONOMIES

(November 22-23, 2019)

The conference was organised by the Centre for Corporate Law and Governance, National Law University Delhi, India; under the Aegis of Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration, A Government of India (SPARC) Initiative.

It focussed on comparative researches in order to have boarder understanding and proposed best practices which can be adopted for improving shareholder engagement in companies.

The conference was organised under the SPARC project – “Re-examining Shareholder Voting and Engagement in Emerging Economies of PR China and India”. The Principal Investigators of the project are Prof. (Dr.) Harpreet Kaur (National Law University Delhi) and Prof. (Dr.) Chao Xi (Chinese University of Hong Kong).

The Inaugural Schedule, was graced by luminaries such as Prof. (Dr.) Harpreet Kaur, Professor of Law, NLUD, spoke about the Conference; Prof. (Dr.) G. S. Bajpai, Registrar, NLUD, gave the welcome address; Prof. (Dr.) Chao Xi, Professor, Chinese University of Hong Kong, delivered the Conference Address; and Dr. Aparajita Bhatt, Asst. Professor, NLUD, gave the Vote of Thanks.

The first day of the Conference witnessed presenters from various parts of the world, presenting reports on Shareholding Voting in their respective countries. They are:-

Anil Hargovan – Australia, Associate Professor & Director of Education, UNSW Business School, Sydney; Prof. Poonam Puri – Canada (in the evening session by Skype), Professor

Osgoode Hall Law School; Prof. (Dr.) Chao Xi – China (Mainland), Professor, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Prof. (Dr.) Christoph Van der Elst – France, Professor, Tilburg Law School; Prof. (Dr.) Harpreet Kaur – India, Professor of Law, National Law University, Delhi; GOTO Gen – Japan, Professor, The University of Tokyo; Dr. Anne Lafarre – Netherlands, Assistant Professor, Tilburg Law School; Robert Chang-hsien TSAI – Taiwan (in the evening session by Skype), Professor from LST, National Tsing Hua University; and Dr. Suren Gomtsian – United Kingdom, Lecturer in Business Law School of Law, University of Leeds.

Sessions over the span of the second day of the Conference included 10 papers and 13 presenters.

At the Valedictory ceremony, the various outcomes of the Conference were discussed by Prof. (Dr.) Harpreet Kaur, Professor of Law, NLUD; and Addresses were delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, Vice Chancellor, NLUD; by Prof. (Dr.) Chao Xi, Professor, Chinese University of Hong Kong; and by Prof. (Dr.) Christoph Van der Elst, Professor, Tilburg Law School.
