Prof. Irene Calboli
Visiting Professor
Irene Calboli specializes in Intellectual Property (IP) and International Trade Law. She is Regents Professor of Law at Texas A&M University School of Law and holds several honorary and visiting academic appointments, including at SciencesPo Paris, the University of Geneva, IE University, Stanford University, Singapore University of Social Sciences, National Law University Delhi, Universitas Padjadjaran, Melbourne University, and Bocconi University. In 2022, she was a Fulbright-Hanken Distinguished Chair in Business and Economics in Finland. A world-renowned expert and an award winning teacher, Irene lectures at academic institutions worldwide, delivering courses on IP, International Trade, and Sustainable Development.
She has published 12 IP books and more than 100 articles, book chapters, and policy reports, which are highly regarded and have been widely cited by policymakers, judges, and practitioners. Her scholarship and advisory activity have helped shape international, regional, and national legislative reforms. She is an Expert for the World Intellectual Property Organization, the World Trade Organization, and the U.N. International Trade Center, and in that capacity has designed curricula and implemented programs for academic, professional, and executive training programs, participated in developing national IP strategies, and advised national governments and IP Offices regarding the accession to international agreements and international organizations.
Irene has extensive managerial experience directing and supervising academic research institutions and teams of researchers and administrators. Throughout her career, she has promoted an open and inclusive global IP community by creating networks and programs connecting scholars, students, and experts from the Global South and the Global North. Her vision and ideas were instrumental in launching, in collaboration with WIPO and WTO, the IP and Innovation Research of Asia (IPIRA) Network and the IP Researchers Europe (IPRE) Conference, two large networks dedicated to facilitating interactions between academics and policymakers in Asia, Europe, and beyond. She additionally contributed to similar initiatives in Latin America and Africa, notably the IP and Innovation Researchers of Latin America (IPILA) and the IP Scholars Africa (IPSA) networks.
Irene serves in leadership capacities in several professional associations, including the International Law Association, the European Policy for Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Trademark Association, and the Association of American Law Schools. She is an elected member of the International Academy of Comparative Law, the American Law Institute, and the European Law Institute, where she is the co-chair of the IP special interest group. She is an active participant in the initiatives of the Asian Law Institute. She is a graduate of the University of Bologna, Queen Mary University, and the London School of Economics. She is fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Italian.
