National Conference on

Language Diversity, Endangerment, and Vitalization: Agenda and Roadmap

21 January 2017

The conference aims at exploring the issues, as listed below in the research agenda of the project on indigenous and endangered languages, amongst the scholars of the field with somewhat different focus areas and approaches, so that they can bring with them different perspectives and enrich the existing understanding of the study of language endangerment. The focus all the while shall remain on the languages under threat in the region of Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas. As we know, India houses four distinct language families with hundreds of languages as classified members, which are Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman and Astro-Asiatic Languages (i.e. indigenous languages of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands). The constitution of India enlists 22 languages in its 8th Schedule and 38 languages are on the doorstep demanding inclusion. However, these numbers do not represent the linguistic diversity of the region. The processes of standardization and homogenization amongst others have created threat to hundreds of languages of the country and consequently leading to their extinction. Language is an integral part of the social identity and ethnicity of a group. In order to preserve a social group's or tribe's cultural identity, it is essential to understand the urgency and draw a roadmap for preserving their cultural, social and linguistic heritage and identity. This conference aims at starting a renewed discourse and a series of initiatives on such issues by expanding the horizons of research and applications of linguistics to the fields of social planning and welfare. We require supporting and promoting research in Indigenous and Endangered Languages paying greater attention to the marginal languages, non-scheduled languages, languages of tribal and nomadic communities and the languages that deserve a measure of social empathy and academic attention for promoting social justice. In this context this conference will place major thrust on framing policies and drawing roadmap for future course of actions.
