Summary: India is one of the fastest growing markets for fintech in the world. Financial institutions in India have been one of the first business sectors to adopt widespread use of technology to innovate, improve services, increase financial inclusion and cut costs.  The rapid growth in mobile and telecommunications services in recent years, coupled with strong government support, resulted in significant expansion of fintech in India. However, the corresponding legal and regulatory systems remain at a nascent stage.

The special issue of the Indian Journal of Law and Technology published in 2023, sought to push the envelope on the need and direction of legal reforms and regulations in relation to fintech in India. The articles delved into issues relating to AI based banking and lending, balancing innovation with privacy, and the rise of decentralised finance. The colloquium at NLUD was the next step in discussing, debating and disseminating the ideas that had been generated in the special issue. The Colloquium witnessed members of the industry, policy and academia critique the articles with the aim to find out the optimal pathway for impact. The ultimate objective being to translate the legal ideas developed in the special issue to optimal legal regulations.

Objective:

the discussions are aimed at transforming existing ideas and policy recommendations on fintech into legal regulations.

The discussions will be a critique on policy recommendations from industry perspective for effective regulation making and implementation.
