International Conference on Transnational Corruption


The Centre for Transparency and Accountability in Governance at National Law University Delhi organised a two-day international conference on Transnational Corruption on 14th and 15th of March 2015. The inaugural session was held on 14th March under the auspices of Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.K. Patnaik, former Supreme Court Judge, and Shri Paramjeet Singh Bawa, Chairman, Transparency International India. Prof. G.S. Bajpai, Registrar, National Law University Delhi, delivered the welcome address.Dr. J.S. Mann, Director of CTAG and Convenor of the Conference, spoke on the theme of the Conference – Transnational Corruption. Shri P.S. Bawa gave the inaugural address. He spoke on the history of Transparency International and its role in today’s world, especially in India. Further, Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.K. Patnaik delivered the keynote address touching upon various high-profile cases on corruption he dealt with during his career.Activists, lawyers, professors, professionals and paper presenters from all over India as well as some foreign countries took part in the Conference in various capacities.

The Conference witnessed lively participation and quality discussion from all the panellists, paper presenters and participants. The Conference saw seven technical sessions over the course of two-days wherein ideas were exchanged, problems identified, solutions suggested. Panellists for the Conference included experts like Shri Jaganathan Saravanswamy,Inspector General, State Human Rights Commission Maharashtra, Mrs. PadminiPradhananga,Transparency International Nepal, Mr. Pranav Sachdeva, Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Prof A.K. Kaul, Former Vice Chancellor, NLU Jodhpur and Ranchi, Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh, Head, School of Corporate Law, IndianInstitute of Corporate Affairs,Ms Neha Bansal, Former Researcher, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, South Asia, Prof J S Chhokar, Former Professor IIM Ahmedabad, & FoundingMember, Association for Democratic Reforms, Shri. Navneet Rajan Wasan, Special Director General,National Investigation Agency, Mr. Ashutosh Kumar Mishra, Executive Director, Transparency International India, Shri ML Sharma, Former CBI Director, Mr Abani Kumar Sahu, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Shri Narinder Singh, Secretary General, Indian Society ofInternational Law,Prof S Sachidanandam, Professor of International Law, National Law University Delhi, Prof Kumar Ingnam, Kathmandu Law School, TribhuvanUniversity, Nepal. Thirty Four Papers were presented by students, teachers and other professionals. Their ideas were questioned and discussed thoroughly followed with helpful suggestions.

The Conference was a huge success. It ended on a high with the Valedictory Session on 15th March. The Session was chaired by Shri. P.S. Bawa, who spoke on the role of Transparency International India in controlling transnational corruption, and co-chaired by Shri Narinder Singh and Prof. S. Sachidanandam who spoke respectively on Effectiveness of treaties/covenants in controllingTransnational Corruption and Controlling Transnational Corruption underUNCAC, 2003.
