Gender Circle Lecture Series

Feb 26, 2015

On the 26th of February, an interactive session with eminent legal researcher Usha Ramanathan kick-started the GenderCircle lecture series, with Dr. Ramanathan's incisive piece 'Reasonable Man, Reasonable Women and Reasonable Expectations' forming the pivot around which the discussion

revolved. 'Reasonable Man, Reasonable Woman and Reasonable Expectations' is the product of a study of High Court judgments between 1920-1950, and introduces the reader to a 'triumvirate of judicial creations'. The piece sketches out the contours of the 'reasonable man' and the 'reasonable woman' in judicial discourse, and provides an insight into how 'reasonable expectations' span the distance between the two. The question and answer session that followed the lecture provided the audience with the opportunity to grapple with fascinating ideas, including the gendered frames of reference that emerge through judicial discourse.

On the 26th of March, Kavita Krishnan, prominent communist feminist activist, delivered a talk titled 'Gender Roles: Family to the Factory', which drew an intriguing link between the gendered policing and regulation of labour, the patriarchal structures that force the vulnerable into exploitation, and global capitalism and consumerism. Ms. Krishnan, Secretary of the All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA) also touched upon the significance of nurturing spaces for dissent and viable strategies of protest. The lecture was followed by an interactive session with students and faculty, and led to engagement on issues that spanned a broad spectrum, ranging from the importance of intersectional perspectives and strategies while scripting narratives of resistance and protest, to alternative ways of imagining and structuring society.

As a part of the GenderCircle lecture series, feminist sociologist Rukmini Sen spoke on 'Rape Culture in College Campuses' on the 7th of May. Dr. Sen contextualized 'cogs in the wheel' student movements within the broader history of the women's movement in India, and provided the audience with an interesting insight into navigating gendered spaces within college campuses. She also stressed the importance of college curricula in shaping mind-sets and the pressing necessity for bridging the distance between academia and activism. The interactive session that followed the talk raised several compelling questions about situations we grapple with daily. Subjects such as the importance of women-only public spaces, dealing with exploitative relationships, and the need for productive dialogue between the votaries and detractors of a movement were examined through the nuanced perspective of an activist and academic.
